Projekt WIPS IT 1: Internet Services for Ship Technology (Schiffstechnische Dienste im Internet)

Project Summary

In the maritime industry, ship newbuilding classification and ship operation and fleet support are core domains of ship classification societies. These societies supply ship owners, shipping companies and operators with suites of IT-supported services, Internet-based and highly personalized. Access to such services is required worldwide and timely by ship owners, ship surveyors and society head-office staff. Depending on connectivity and context, a variety of different working environments has to be supported: offline and online, mobile and stationary, public and private etc.
The WIPS IT 1 project reported here investigates suites of Internet services for several classes of ship technology-related use cases:

  • web-based ship information and calculation services for classification society staff,
  • web- and mobile interface-based ship status checking for ship owners,
  • offline work support for ship surveyors onboard ships with mobile devices, and
  • mobile information services for ship owners, shipping company staff.
The service platform and online portal developed in the WIPS IT 1 project have proven to be suitable for provision of services and information to support mobile and stationary, offline and online work environments in the maritime industry. The results presented are the outcome of a joint national R&D project.
