Reverse Engineering, Testing, and Fault Tolerance

High instability or poor maintainability of a software system may depend on details that can be hard to figure out. Employing methods from reverse engineering we develop techniques that allow one to isolate specific aspects of a complex software system, and to rigorously describe or trace them in a controlled way.

Adaptive Systems, Model-Based Development, Software Languages
Systems that need to adapt to changing circumstances in their environment present particular challenges when the parameters from the physical world are imprecisely represented, poorly understood, or not known at all. We look into both theoretical and practical aspects of adaptive models, including algebraic, logic, and multi-agent models. Application areas of interest comprise socialeconomical domains especially with cooperative scenarios, as well as various technical domains.

Multi-Media Information Extraction and Retrieval, Semantic Web
Many documents on the Internet are multimedial, that is, they consist not just of text but also of videos, images, animation, or speech. We devise new inference mechanisms that allow generating annotations with which one can process queries of a high degree of abstraction. Those mechanisms reduce the effort needed to provide personalized information extraction and navigation systems.
