How to organize a
student project / master thesis

To realize a successful thesis /student project
it is strongly recommendet that you follow the procedure described below.
You can print out this side and mark the done work with a tick in the appropriate box.
 

     
Phase 1       Preparation

Done

 

1.

Contact
The first contact is supposed to arrange a date for the preliminary discussion.
  2. Preliminary discussion with Professor
2.1 Student delivers a topic proposal (if available)
2.2 Student is supposed to give some personal information
      (e-mail, interests, curriculum, ...)
2.3 Student and professor develop a scientific question/problem
  3. Professor develops topic proposal
  4. Problem discussion between Student, Professor and Advisor.
Student receives the elaborated topic for the thesis/project
  5. Student registers the thesis/student project at the central examination office (Zentrales Prüfungsamt der TUHH)
  6. Student chooses a second examiner
           
     
Phase 2       Work period

 
    Student accomplishes theoretical & practical work and writes report
- 3 months for student project
- 6 months for master thesis / diploma thesis
Student contacts his Advisor/Professor to discuss problems and questions
           
     
Phase 3       Handover and Presentation

 
 
The procedure depends on the rules of the curriculum. In case of doubt the student is supposed to find out the right procedure. In many cases the procedure is as follows:
Student delivers at least two copies
of the report to the central examination office
(Zentrales Prüfungsamt)
 
Student delivers PDF-File
of the report to the secretary of STS for archival storage
 
Student invites the first examiner and the second examiner to the final presentation in the STS Oberseminar
 
Final Presentation at the Oberseminar
- Short description of the problem that had to be solved
- Presentation of the accomplished work
  and the problem solution
- Discussion of the proposed solution (pros and cons)
